Gathering in honour of the pope postponed

HONG KONG (SE): Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and the Holy See Study Mission have decided to postpone the proposed musical offering and Mass on the occasion of the birthday of Pope Francis scheduled for December 13. To comply with the government regulations on account of rising numbers of Covid-19 infection cases in the city, the organisers decided to postpone the event to June 27, Sunday closest to the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

Pope Francis will turn 84 on December 17 and December 13 is his 51 sacerdotal anniversary. Pope’s birthday gathering is an annual event jointly hosted by The Study Mission and the Diocese as an occasion for the faithful of the city to express their affection for the Pope and to pray for him. This year’s celebration has chosen the theme, “Trust in the Lord.”

The Proposal to go ahead with live streaming of the event through webcasting was also deemed not feasible as it would imply gathering of the celebrants of the Mass and the Choir. Monsignor Javier Herrera Corona, the head of the Holy See Study Mission expressed his gratitude to all the people who were involved in the preparing for the event on December 13. According to him, the same format planned for this event shall be followed on the new date.

Over 400 people had registered online for participating in the event. They will be notified of the cancellation of the event. A new QR code for registration will be issued by the Study Mission for the event on June 27.
