Suffering Jesus, you took up your cross
Heavy with the burden of our sins;
Already in such pain and torment
Our sinfulness, your heart’s lament.
Each step along the way to Calvary
Your cross grew painfully heavier;
Flesh torn from the cruel lashing,
Your wounded shoulder gushing.
The crowd staring and scorning
As the man of sorrows passes by,
With a crown of thorns upon his head
Where a king’s crown should be instead.
O man of sorrows falling along the way
Dashing your bruised and swollen knees;
Carry your Cross for sinful humanity,
None other can bear our sins victoriously.
Our sins nailed to the Cross with you
Heaven opened with your dying breath.
Come follow Jesus along the Way to Calvary,
Carry your cross
and share in his victory.
