When your employer keeps a watchful eye on you …

When your employer keeps a watchful eye on you …

When someone is watching over me while working I feel uneasy and uncomfortable. Because even if I am doing the right thing, for them it is not right enough. They might yell and nag at me any moment especially in taking care of the babies. I need to focus and concentrate on what I am doing.

However as time passed by I was able to overcome it. I realised that there is a positive outcome if there is a video camera all over the house because it serves as a security for me. If something bad happens the video can be used as a solid evidence for my employer to check. In fact I don’t need to care if my employer is watching over me through the camera or not as long as I’m performing my job right.

The continued spread of covid 19 is forcing million of people to work from home. Many employers just stay home for safety reasons so they have more chances to monitor our work. For me video surveillance or anybody watching me while working is not a hindrance to do my task and it doesn’t give any discomfort because I am confident that I’m doing my best and work hard for the good of everybody. So I just stay focussed on my work, ask guidance from God, finish my work on time and be honest to myself and to anybody.

Working under a video camera was not easy at first, when I saw a device moving to my direction every time. I felt uncomfortable. But I gradually got used to it. In fact, CCTV is everywhere and it is just a common thing, I consider it no big deal. As long as I’m not doing anything bad at my employer’s house and I perform my duties, there is nothing to be feared of. Just do the right thing. Even if there are watchful eyes, I am not affected.

At first I felt embarrassed under the camera but now I get used to it. An attitude of humility and good spiritual life can help us handle the situation. Our hearts can be at peace if we are humble enough while doing our household chores despite being surrounded by so many distractions. Always bear in our hearts that no servant is greater than his master (John 13:16).

I once worked for an old lady living alone. She would really watch every movement I make. I felt uncomfortable and tensed. If she is not satisfied with my job, she would complain and ask me to do it all over again. At first I thought it was not a problem as it helped me to improve my job. However the situation worsened because of her meticulous trait. When she went out, which was quite rare, she made it a point to turn on the CCTV, which I thought would be better than her being around. After my two-year contract ended I decided not to renew it anymore. My present employer is different. She allows me freedom in my work. Actually having a video camera at home is fine with me specially if the employers are working outside. I know my capabilities in handling my work. My previous workplace was just a special case.

Of course I am not comfortable with a CCTV in my employer’s home. However I am not really affected and just ignore it since I am not doing anything wrong. My ward’s grandma often comes and watches my work. She may report what happens to the employer. But I try my best to love her and respect her like my own mother. I communicate with her and help her understand the situation. I may feel uncomfortable being watched but I have no qualms since I know I do my duties properly.

I have been working for the same employer for 24 years but I never felt any discomfort when she watches my work because I am doing everything for God. What is important is that I love my work and do it patiently. I perform my duties as expected by my employer. I smile while working because it removes stress. It is also good to have an openness with them. When I do my prayers, I include my employer’s family in it. I am grateful and blessed as I work for them and they too are contented with my performance. That’s why the employment relationship can last long.
