Can you express yourself with confidence?

Can you express yourself with confidence?

Most of the time I prefer remaining silent because I cannot stand a battle. I choose to stay calm or just ignore the matter but it does not mean that I am a loser. Maturity comes when you know how to deal with a situation and when to talk. I can express myself confidently in the right time.

There are many situations that you need to voice out and I am brave enough to fight for my rights and I know I can handle it because I have the courage and confidence to speak out as long as I know I am right. But sometimes I keep silent and it is the best way to show my anger.

— Victoria Baliga

It depends on the situation. If I think a brewing argument is nonsense, I won’t let the other party even see me affected by whatever is said. I will just leave that person fuming mad by not answering back and ignoring him or her. However if it is something important I will just explain my side and then I will let the listener ponder. I won’t enforce my belief and I respect the opinions of others just as I believe that my belief and opinion should also be respected.

If I am sure about what I am going to say, I can say it with confidence. But if I realise that there’s no point in discussing with the other party and we are getting nowhere or it would cause endless arguments, then I give up. Whether I can express myself with confidence or not depends on the person I am talking to. For example, when I talk to my employer, if she is in a bad mood, it may not be a good time to explain in details because she may not listen. However, I will give an explanation in a few words and it is up to her to accept or not. Then I just keep quiet or just say sorry.

I find it hard to express myself at times specially when I think I am unfairly blamed for something. So I pray for God’s guidance to put words in my mouth. Sometimes it is anger that hinders me from expressing myself. My silence is not due to a lack of confidence in me but rather I avoid talking too much when I am angry because I may lash out at someone. Words spoken are hard to retrieve. In other cases I have confidence as long as I know where I stand.

A  good knowledge of your subject matter gives you confidence in what you are talking about. Research, listening, observation and putting them into practice can help you talk with substantial information. Secondly, we need to know about our audience or listeners as it will help you choose or adjust your way of relating with them. Last but not the least is paying attention to your way of expression. Create a lively relationship. Make use of appropriate or simple words that inspire and encourage the listeners. A sense of humour can be a must of your presentation. Let your audience experience that learning is fun. It will help encourage them to express themselves.

Expressing oneself is an art. Some people have the ability to express thenselves so easily while others experience the difficulty to do so. Some are very outspoken and some are so shy. The difference depends generally on ones family influence and social exposure. Self confidence in speaking is developed through experience and training. One can learn the art of expression which eventually becomes a skill. Courage and honesty is also important. The more you learn, the more courage you gain. Being honesty in what you say can also help you gain trust from your listeners. These are the basic principles in the training given to me and I follow them in expressing myself.

If I think I am in the right side and can deal with the present situation, I have the confidence to say what I think. Sometimes we do not need to remain silent and keep the burden within ourselves. We need to step out from our comfort zone and express ourselves. And always remember to wear a smile as long as you can because a simple smile can give people a friendly message which can help you settle down some matters.
