Children during my time enjoyed playing games outside the house. Everyone was having fun. Unlike children in the past, when innocence and simplicity of a child could be seen, the children nowadays have their own world.
When I was a child, I enjoyed even the simplest things my parents could provide: children’s outdoor games, helping my parents in household chores, the simple dresses I wear. We were told to respect elders. But children now prefer to play with computer gadgets than playing with other children. Some even have their own Ipads or mobile phones. During my time, children would come home wet with perspiration and it wasn’t a big deal. Kids today are unable to get out of the house if their clothings are soiled.

Before the age of computer, children during my time were easy to be disciplined. They behaved themselves after their parents gave them an angry look. Kids of the present time are hard to be taught as they tend to reason out with their parents. They have learned many things, good and bad, through the social media. The children of today are smarter and excel academically. They can study through online lessons. At a young age they can be computer wizards. But I still prefer to see the joys of a child during my time. I enjoyed the innocence of a child. Children now do not have much of this. They act and talk like an adult.

During my younger years as a child, I enjoyed the simplicity of life. We spent a lot of time outside the house after school. Now kids need to study at home after coming home from school. When there were researches to be done, we went to the library to research. Children now can do their school researches through the Internet. When I was a kid my mother would teach me how to cook. Children now do not know household chores. They are so engrossed with mobile games. If you take notice in public transports or walking, parents and children focussed on their phones. During my time as a kid, in the evening we would bond as a family enjoying the company of one another.

I have many good memories of my childhood. I grew up in poverty but persevered and worked hard to be able to go to school. I was selling ice cream and other sweets when I was in elementary school and clothes during high school. However even if I was busy I also enjoyed playing with my friends. I liked hide-and-seek and other games outside the house. As a single mother and I don’t want my children to experience hardships that I had so I work hard. In 2001 I started to work abroad and now my eldest child have a job already. I noticed that children nowadays are different. They learn music, drawing, self improvement or attend discipline class. It seems that they are not able to enjoy their childhood. So I like to see my four-year-old ward playing games with other kids.

After school, I enjoyed playing outside the house but children today are not always allowed to do that. I played Chinese garter, text cards, marble, climbed the trees and other Filipino games. Now my three-year-old ward and children of this generation preferred computer, TV and gadgets. As for my children, they are really different from me when I was a child. For example, my son does not cherish the chance to go to school. Even though I want to give him good education, he skips lessons just to play in computer shops, so I decided to stop him from going to school to let him realise what is important to him. Luckily he has decided to study hard and next school year I can enroll him again.
