HONG KONG (SE): The Justice and Peace Commission of Hong Kong made an appeal for people to show more concern for physically disadvantaged people during the Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak as they may not be adequately protected.
In message posted on Facebook on February 26 the commission highlighted the plight of the physically disadvantaged. It raised concerns that they may not have enough supplies of face masks even though they often need to go to hospitals.
The commission noted that it would be hard for them to line up to search for and purchase masks at different shops at a time when panic buying has caused a shortage in the market.
Some of them may not have access to a computer or smartphone due to their physical condition and this makes it hard for them to obtain information about the prevention of virus transmission through the Internet.
The Justice and Peace Commission also expressed concern about the suspension of classes in special schools, which has made it necessary for some parents to stop working and stay at home to take care of their children with serious disabilities. It says some caregivers may face a lot of pressure, as they are without outside support the whole day and the situation for elderly parents with grown up children with disabilities may be worse.
The commission believes these parents may not have time to buy sanitary detergents, masks or other protective products as they have to remain at home with their children most of the day. They may feel particularly vulnerable when there is a shortage of supply of essential materials and feel unable to give their families the necessary protection.
The commission urged people to pay more attention to the marginalised families around them and share their resources if possible. It also called on people not to make any panic purchases of masks or sanitising products so that there will be enough for others.
