Power of unity shown in a three-in-one celebration

Three communities celebrated their anniversaries at St. Alfred’s parish, Tai Wai, on October 6. They are St. Alfred’s English Speaking Community Choir, One In Christ Prayer Group and the Elim Community in Taiwai which celebrated their 32nd, 24th and 15th anniversaries.

Despite the blackout of MTR and railway stations with limited bus services, the event went on smoothly with around 250 people present. The celebration kicked off with a Mass celebrated by parish priest Oblate Father Slawomir Kalisz at 9.00am, who also gave a blessing to all the members of the three groups. The joint celebration, held for the first time in the parish, was organised on the suggestion of the parish priest.

The afternoon programme opened with a prayer and blessing of the food led by assistant parish priest Father Paul Shen Xiaolong. A warm welcome address was then given by Sister Mary Cordero, who helped in organising the event. The theme for the day’s celebration was, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133:1).

Following a warm-up song, “This is the Day,” the three groups knelt down before the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary as they sang the Marian song, “Gratia Plena” in honour of her for this Month of Rosary.

The praying or recitation of a daily rosary was highly recommended by our parish priest who explained its importance in our life during his message. He also emphasised that Pope Francis has declared this October to be an Extraordinary Month of Mission.

The invited main guest speaker was Sister Maricris Llasos, regional superior of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Angels, who came all the way from Macau. She spoke on the topic of unity, love and care of our neighbours and within our community. Another invited guest was Father Paul Vladimyr Eustache who gave his full support that afternoon.

One highlight of the event was the distribution of the certificates of membership, appreciation and recognition to members of the groups.

A birthday cake was later brought to the stage to celebrate the birthday of Father Kalisz. He was also joined on stage by other October celebrants.

Groups then introduced their Sunday activities and services inside and outside the church with video presentations. Talented members then brought joy and inspirations to those present with their songs, dances and poetry, while some openly did personal faith sharings. The group coordinators also gave their messages, showing love and friendship among the members.
