HONG KONG (SE): Canossian Sister Joanna Wong passed away on May 31, the feast of the Holy Trinity. She was 84-years-old.
She was born in Hong Kong in 1942. In 1967, aspiring to the religious life, she joined the Canossian Institute, making her first profession in 1970 and her perpetual profession in 1977.
Sister Wong devoted most of her life to education, undertaking teaching and administrative roles at several schools, including the Sacred Heart Canossian School, St Mary’s Canossian College, Pui Tak Canossian College, Sacred Heart Canossian College of Commerce, Pui Tak Canossian School and Canossa School Hong Kong.
In 2001, she was sent to Oxley, Australia, for pastoral care service. After nine years, she returned to Hong Kong. Soon afterwards, she was assigned to Coloane, Macau, where she joined the community in visiting women in the elderly home.
Sister Wong’s health began to deteriorate gradually in recent years, which prevented her from continuing her active service.
A funeral service was held at the chapel of St Michael Cemetery, Macau, on June 11 with the Mass celebrated by Father Jose Lau and attended by the Canossian Sisters, Sister Wong’s family, and some of her students. Her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery.
To commemorate her life, a requiem Mass was celebrated on July 10 at the Canossian Missions Chapel, Caine Road, Hong Kong, by Father Xavier Wong, with Sister Wong’s family, the Canossian Sisters, the Lay Canossians, friends, and past students in attendance. One former student gave testimony to her kindness towards students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The family of Sister Wong and the Canossian Sisters express their gratitude for the blessings God bestowed upon Sister Wong’s life, and they ask for prayers for the eternal rest of her soul.
