PARIS (OSV News): Ahead of the first anniversary of his election to the chair of St. Peter, the French Bishops’ Conference announced Pope Leo XIV is expected to make an official visit to France in late September.

Church leaders say the trip would likely include stops in Paris and at the Marian shrine of Lourdes, though the Vatican has not yet confirmed the itinerary or dates.

Jean-Marc Cardinal Aveline of Marseille, said discussions with the pope have already produced a preliminary schedule. Reports in France point to a possible visit around September 19, just months before the country enters the campaign season for the 2027 presidential election.

Preparations are already underway in Lourdes, where Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes, said Pope Leo is expected to celebrate Mass, lead the famous torchlight procession, and spend the night at the sanctuary. The bishop described the atmosphere among staff and pilgrims as one of “great joy.”

The visit would mark Pope Leo’s first trip to France as pontiff and could include appearances at Notre Dame Cathedral and the Collège des Bernardins in Paris. The bishops say the pope has often expressed admiration for France’s spiritual heritage and a strong desire to visit the country officially.
