Before people with different views…

Before people with different views…

As we all know, everyone has the right to his or her own opinion regarding the events unfolding around us, whether related to social issues or government. Personally, I do not aim to convince anyone to adopt my beliefs, as trying to change someone’s viewpoint—especially if his disposition and integrity are complex—can lead to misunderstandings and endless arguments. I choose to respect other individuals’ opinions, as I wish for them to extend the same courtesy to mine. By doing so, I believe we can create a more peaceful world.

Each one of us has the right to his or her own opinion. Convincing someone to alter their viewpoint would be radical unless approached calmly, persuasively, and with respect. It’s vital to consider all the facts and explain both the pros and cons carefully, ensuring that no feelings are hurt, as conflict is not the goal—harmonious relationships are. Changing someone’s opinion cannot happen overnight, so we must allow them sufficient time to contemplate our perspective and inquire if they would consider it.

I believe we are all built differently, leading to a variety of opinions that are shaped by our respective environments. Consequently, it is challenging to expect someone to fully change their opinion. I respect their views, as they have their reasons for believing what they do. I think we can be tools for influencing others by providing respectful reasons for our opinions, allowing them to understand our perspective. However, I contend that opinions rooted in pure hatred are not worthwhile.

To convince someone, it is essential to present our ideas clearly while remaining steadfast in our beliefs. It is acceptable to initially have differing views, but we must also consider the other person’s perspective and seek to understand what led them to their opinion. By being respectful, we can gradually share our viewpoints without invalidating theirs. Building trust is crucial in the process of persuasion.

The best way to persuade someone is to listen carefully to their viewpoint to genuinely understand it. Identifying common ground or agreeing with a part of their idea demonstrates respect. Instead of arguing directly, we should calmly share our experiences and facts that support our perspective. By asking questions, we can guide them towards a different way of thinking without appearing confrontational. Changing someone’s mind often requires time rather than a single discussion. Ultimately, it’s about helping them discover a new idea, not imposing our own.

Marilou R. San Jose

Convincing someone with differing opinions can be challenging but not impossible. Effective communication skills and strategies are essential. We must identify our goals, prepare arguments, and listen actively and respectfully to build rapport and trust. Demonstrating empathy can help reduce resistance and foster a positive emotional connection. Furthermore, presenting the validity, relevance, and benefits of our viewpoint through facts and statistics strengthens our arguments.
