The Cantonese Chaplaincy in the Catholic Diocese of East Anglia, the United Kingdom, celebrated Lunar New Year with a party held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Sawston, on February 28, with 84 attendees from the region and beyond. The event began with a Thanksgiving Mass in Cantonese, celebrated by Canon John Minh, assisted by Deacon Peter Ho who will be ordained in July 2026.
Although it is Lent, red vestments were worn, symbolising auspiciousness and the blood of Chinese Catholic martyrs. The celebration blends ancient Chinese tradition with Lent’s penitential reflection, emphasizing gratitude, reconciliation, and redemption through Christ.
Deacon Ho delivered his first gospel proclamation and homily in Cantonese, impressing the congregation with his zeal. He proclaimed the Gospel of John, highlighting Jesus as the light of the world and the source of spiritual renewal.
The Mass concluded with a solemn blessing for faith, hope, and charity throughout the Year of the Horse.
Following Mass, a traditional party was held in the hall featuring a lion dance, with the troupe paying respect to the crucifix, and interactive activities like riddle-solving with biblical and cultural themes, and a calligraphy session to preserve cultural heritage among younger generations.
The community expressed gratitude to Bishop Peter Collins of East Anglia, Canon John Minh, other clergy supporting the Cantonese ministry as well as the diocese of Hong Kong as it marks its 80th anniversary.
The day ended with a special Cantonese song about God’s blessings composed by a talented musician in the community about the blessings received from God.
