HONG KONG (SE): Pope Leo XIV appointed Archbishop Javier Herrera Corona, currently the Apostolic Nuncio in Algeria, to extend the Vatican’s diplomatic representation in Tunisia, the Holy See Press Office announced on February 16, according to a report by ACIAfrica.
Archbishop Herrera-Corona was assigned to the Holy See Study Mission in Hong Kong in September 2016, and served as head of the Study Mission until February 2022, when he was named apostolic nuncio to the Republic of the Congo and to Gabon. He was ordained as an archbishop in April 2022 and assigned the titular see of Vulturara in Italy [Sunday Examiner, 24 April 2022).
Archbishop Herrera-Corona was born in Autlán, Mexico, on 15 May 1968. He was ordained a priest on 21 September 1993 and incardinated in the Diocese of Autlán. In addition to his native Spanish, he speaks English, Italian and French.
He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 2003, serving in the pontifical representations in Pakistan, Peru, Kenya, Great Britain and the Philippines.
The Holy See Press Office also announced that Bishop Teodoro Mendes Tavares would become the bishop of the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde in Cape Verde, following the resignation of his predecessor, Arlindo Cardinal Gomes Furtado.
