HONG KONG (SE): On December 25, a special Christmas Mass themed “Hope and Healing” was organised by the Philippine Consulate for survivors of the 26 November 2025 fire at Wang Fuk Court, Tai Po.

The private Mass was attended by around 10 survivors, consul general, Romulo Victor Israel and other consulate representatives, as well as volunteers.

Filipino chaplain, Divine Word Father Jay Flandez, in his homily, said that survivors can offer hope to others as their perseverance through adversity is a testimony to the light amidst tragedy.

Father Flandez emphasised that, even in times of darkness, turning to Jesus—the Word—brings enlightenment. He connected this message to the Jubilee theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” encouraging survivors to become agents of hope for others.

To support those traumatised by the incident, the consulate has also organised debriefing sessions, led by social workers, psychologists, and religious leaders, to help the community cope.

The day before, the traditional Christmas Eve Mass—Misa de Aguinaldo—for Filipinos in Hong Kong took place at the OWWA [Overseas Workers Welfare Administration] centre.

In his homily, Father Flandez emphasised that the birth of Jesus is a profound expression of God’s sacrificial love for humanity, inviting us to participate in salvation through love, prayer, and service. He highlighted Jesus’ humility in becoming human, serving as a model for migrants and overseas workers who adapt to new cultures while making personal sacrifices for their families.

He reminded those present of  the importance of spirituality over worldly concerns, as our relationship with God offers eternal support. He likens Jesus to a guiding light in life’s darkness, reminding us that Christ should be the heart of our Christmas celebrations and daily lives.

The congregation offered prayers for joy and hope within the Church, justice and peace for nations in conflict, unity in families, overseas workers facing struggles. Special prayers were dedicated to both the deceased and survivors of the Tai Po fire.

In his year-end reflection before the Mass, assistant labour attaché, Antonio Villafuerte, called for Filipino migrants to unite in overcoming challenges. He noted that despite difficulties, communities remain strong, looking forward to facing future obstacles together.
