VATICAN (SE): As Super Typhoon Fung-wong [Uwan] barreled through the Philippines only a week after Typhoon Kalmaegi [Tino] wreaked devastation and loss Pope Leo XIV offered his prayers after leading the recitation of the Angelus prayer with visitors in St. Peter’s Square on November 9, CNS reported.
“I express my closeness to the people of the Philippines who have been hit by a violent typhoon: I pray for the deceased and their families, as well as for the injured and displaced,” the pope said.
Various media reports said that over a million people were preemptively evacuated as the super typhoon struck with sustained winds of around 185kph and gusts of 230kph. The PAGASA warned of “high-risk of life-threatening” storm surges.
