Stephen Cheung appointed president of Saint Francis University

HONG KONG (SE): Saint Francis University (SFU) announced the appointment of Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung as the new president on September 15.
Professor Cheung has a distinguished record in Hong Kong’s higher education sector, combining with extensive administrative experience. He served as president of the Education University of Hong Kong from 2013 to 2023 and previously held the roles of dean and chair professor of finance at Hong Kong Baptist University.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and doctoral degrees from the University of Paris VI in France and the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. As an internationally renowned finance scholar, he has made significant contributions in corporate social responsibility and financial market development, with his research published in leading academic journals.
In addition to his academic achievements, Professor Cheung has a strong commitment to public service, having held leadership roles in finance, regional economic cooperation, cultural development, social innovation, and public transport.
Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., chairperson of SFU’s Board of Governors, welcomed Professor Cheung, stating, “Professor Cheung is a proven leader in higher education and a renowned scholar who understands SFU’s strengths and aspirations. He is fully committed to SFU’s mission, making him well-suited to lead the university into the future.”
Doctor Denis Chang, chairperson of the SFU Council, echoed this sentiment, emphasising Professor Cheung’s exemplary leadership and achievements in enhancing teaching and research across disciplines. He noted that Professor Cheung has effectively engaged with stakeholders to drive transformative change and expressed confidence in his ability to elevate the university’s impact and reputation.
Upon his appointment, Professor Cheung shared his enthusiasm: “I am honoured by the trust placed in me and accept this appointment with humility. I am excited to join SFU, a young and vibrant university that has emerged as a leader in applied sciences in Hong Kong.” He believes that the signature programmes of the SFU, in the areas of social work, early childhood education, artificial intelligence, business, hospitality management, and design, are crucial to the development of Hong Kong and our country.
“I look forward to working with the SFU community to unlock the university’s full potential, providing young people with more opportunities for upward mobility and empowering them to thrive in a hope-filled future,” he stated.
The university also expresses its sincere appreciation to Professor Lo Tit-wing for his dedicated service as acting president. Professor Lo will resume his role as vice president (research and development) and continue to advance the university’s research and academic work.
