SEOUL (SE): The Korean Missionary Society (KMS) celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Mass at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul on February 26. This event, was a vibrant display of faith and unity, the Committee for Communications of the Archdiocese of Seoul said in a press release.

Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung of Seoul presided over the Mass, which was attended by a significant gathering of clergy and faithful, marking the society’s enduring mission. Notable guests included Andrew Cardinal Soo-jung Yeom and Archbishop Giovanni Gaspari, the apostolic nuncio to Korea, who delivered a heartfelt message from Pope Francis. Participants from various missionary organisations, including the Guadalupe Missionaries, Maryknoll, and the Salesian Sisters, also attended, demonstrating a shared commitment to global mission work.

The Mass began with a procession showcasing representatives from the nine countries where KMS is engaged in missionary efforts: Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, China, Cambodia, Mozambique, the Philippines, Mexico, and the United States. This procession symbolised the society’s extensive global reach and dedication.

In his message, Pope Francis extended his greetings and expressed his spiritual closeness to everyone present at the Eucharistic celebration. He urged all attendees to give thanks to Almighty God for the many graces received over the years. The pope expressed his hope that this milestone would inspire “a renewed missionary zeal that overcomes cultural barriers and religious indifference by preaching ‘more effectively the truth of the Gospel in a specific context, without renouncing the truth’ [Evangelii Gaudium, 45].”

He conveyed confidence that missionaries would continue to boldly proclaim their faith, ensuring it touches hearts and leads to a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ.

The pope commended everyone to the loving intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and imparted his blessing as a promise of wisdom, strength, and joy in the Lord.

The event not only celebrated a significant milestone for the Korean Missionary Society but also served as an inspiration for ongoing dedication to spreading the gospel and fostering unity through faith worldwide.
