Learning from Mary and Martha

Learning from Mary and Martha

The relationship I have with my grandparents on both sides is worth remembering. They are all so warm and loving. When I was in elementary school, my paternal grandfather used to pick me up every afternoon and accompany me home. Moreover, whenever he visited us, he brought us some delicacies. My maternal grandfather gave me my name. My grandmother took good care of me when I was pregnant. They love me, and I love them so much, too!

Being close to my grandparents was a joy and a pleasure. There was no match for the love and attention I received from them when I was around them. Whenever they visited us, they always brought us food. They were very patient and loving to us. Though they both passed away, it still gives us pain, knowing they could no longer be with us. My memories of my grandparents will never be erased from my mind.

My grandmother is an inspirational woman who raised three kids alone because my grandfather died young. She worked part-time as a working student through her college years and managed to excel despite the overwhelming workload she had to endure. She defied all odds and proved that if you submit yourself to God, everything will be granted to you at the right time. Grandma was like a second mom to me. She recently turned 89 on July 4. She currently lives in the United States with my mother’s sister.

My fondest memories consist of her teaching me Bible stories, reading spiritual books, singing songs and hanging out while telling me stories of her past. These were her ways of showing her love to us. I have enjoyed our short time together up until now, and I will cherish it.

Grandparents play a major role in our childhood life because they are the ones who teach us to become better people and respect all people as we grow up.

I grew up with my grandparents in Siquijor. My mom was there too, but my grandparents always stood by my side, taking care of my needs. I am very close to them, from both my mom and dad’s side. They have loved and cared for me my whole life; they serve as my parents, too, and I am so lucky to have them in my life. They have guided and moulded me into a better person, especially my grandparents from my mom’s side. They always give me advice on how life can be cruel sometimes, but it is for us to decide whether or not we will let it break us or use those struggles to make us stronger.

As I recall from my childhood, my grandfather was a loving, God-fearing, and great man who always taught me how to pray, be good and respect others. I appreciate those teachings and fond memories I had with him because it means a lot to me, and I will never forget all the things he has done for me.

My grandparents were always full of love and care. My grandmother cooked the best “pinakbet” (mixed vegetable dish) and “dinengdeng” (vegetable dish). Every morning she braided my hair before I went to school and waited for me in the street when I came home. I appreciate and treasure them in my heart. The memories of them will be passed on to my children.

My grandparents are a source of encouragement and support. The essential thing is that they have faith in my abilities. In times of adversity, they are the ones who encourage me to follow my ambition. Some of my aspirations may not make sense to them, but they always have faith in me. In addition, I feel safe and secure because of my grandparents. There is no doubt that my grandparents, while not living close by, always pray for my well-being.
