HONG KONG (SE): The Diocesan Pastoral Centre for Workers – Ethnic Minority Service has moved from Yau Ma Tei to a more accessible location at the Double Set Commercial Centre on Jordan Road. The relocation, completed at the end of February, aims to better serve ethnic minority workers in Kowloon, particularly those in the cleaning sector.

A blessing and opening ceremony took place on February 22, officiated by vicar general, Father Paul Kam Po-wai. The event was attended by ethnic minority workers and representatives from various community groups, including the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Central Council of Hong Kong and MercyHK.

Elizabeth But Ngan-ping, centre supervisor of the Diocesan Pastoral Centres for Workers-Kowloon, highlighted the strategic location of the new centre, which they have used since January. Situated near three refuse collection points, it provides a convenient space for cleaning workers to rest and access support services. She noted that the relocation has led to an increase in the number of workers visiting the centre, as it is now closer to their workplaces and homes.

Established in 2004, the centre has long supported ethnic minority workers, with a recent emphasis on those in the cleaning industry. It offers services such as language learning, employment assistance, labour rights advocacy, and hobby classes to help workers develop their skills and talents.

During the opening event, attendees received souvenirs, including thermal bottles designed by the Labour Commission for the Jubilee Year and postcards painted by Nepali cleaners. The postcards depicted the challenges faced by these workers, such as harsh weather conditions and difficulties in learning Chinese.
