Thousands attend prayer service to mourn dead student

HONG KONG (SE): Thousands of people attended a prayer service at Chater Garden, Central, on November 10 to mourn the death of 22-year-old Alex Chow Tsz-lok, a student from the University of Science and Technology, who reportedly fell from height at a carpark in Tseung Kwan O on November 8.  He was found lying injured in a car park at Sheung Tak Estate on November 4. While the actual circumstances remain unclear, it is believed he fell from the third level to the second level of the facility after police had fired multiple rounds of tear gas to disperse protesters throwing bottles and bricks.

Catholic and Protestant Church leaders at the prayer service expressed their pains and sorrow over the loss of Chow’s life and led participants prayed for the rest of his soul.

Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing of Hong Kong, called on the government to set up a coroner’s court as soon as possible to investigate on Chow’s death. He believes that no one with a conscience can accept an unclear cause of death and that not getting to the truth will only worsen the situation in Hong Kong.

RTHK reported that the bishop added that violence has escalated on both sides and it appears to be getting increasingly difficult to find a resolution to the conflicts.

“What’s visible is the vandalism of public property. What’s not visible is how the souls of countless people, especially young people, are being eaten away and tortured,” Bishop Ha said.
